Detour for NC 58 Begins Monday, November 13

View our Crystal Coast photo of the month ( sure to make you smile 🙂

Beginning November 13, NC 58 (Emerald Drive) will be closed between Islander Drive and Loon Drive. A detour will be in effect. This detour is required to permit the construction of a new traffic roundabout at the intersection of NC 58 and Mallard Drive. Mallard Drive will stay open from Reed Drive, but will be closed between NC 58 and Crew Drive.

Passenger vehicles (cars, SUV’s and light trucks) should use Reed Drive, via Islander Drive and Loon Drive (at the entrance to Emerald Plantation Shopping Center). Tractor-trailers and large trucks should use Crew Drive, via Coast Guard Road and NC 58. A temporary road will be established through the new Publix property, and will connect Crew Drive to NC 58 to accommodate the truck detour. School buses are allowed on both routes. Passenger vehicles may continue to use Crew Drive to access and leave Emerald Plantation Shopping Center.

The NC 58 bicycle path will remain open during construction, however, limited duration closures may occur occasionally later in the construction process.

This project was scheduled for the winter months in order to minimize disruption in Emerald Isle.  The detour is expected to remain in effect until early March.

Town of Emerald Isle Accomplishments Part 1: Public Use of Beaches

View our Crystal Coast photo of the month ( sure to make you smile 🙂

This will be a blog series on the Town of Emerald Isle’s accomplishments throughout the past year.

The Town’s Efforts to Preserve the Public’s Right to Use the Beaches in North Carolina

The Town of Emerald Isle has worked rigorously since 2011 to defend the public’s right to use the beach here in Emerald Isle, and all of North Carolina. Those efforts paid off recently with the successful resolution of the Nies v. Emerald Isle court case. This case threatened to change the public’s historical use of the flat, sandy beach between the base of the dunes and the water, and could have resulted in remarkable consequences for any and everyone who enjoys North Carolina’s beaches.

Luckily, with the December 2016 refusal of the NC Supreme Court and the October 2017 refusal of the United States Supreme Court to further consider the Nies case, the November 2015 decision in the NC Court of Appeals in favor of the town is now the definitive case law on the public’s right to use the beach in North Carolina. The Town had worked hard with numerous partners on this crucial issue over the past 2 years, and is delighted that the public’s historical right to use the beach remains intact!
